ALLEN TOUSSAINT JUST ADDED TO THE NEW ORLEANS SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL
New Orleans, LA (November 18, 2008)—Songfest Foundation, Inc., a New Orleans-based charitable organization founded to benefit Louisiana and Gulf Coast music and musicians is pleased to announce the first ever New Orleans Songwriters Festival. The event also, also known as “Songfest,” is being sponsored by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), which has been representing songwriters, composers and publishers since its inception in 1914.
The two-day event will take place Friday, December 5 and Saturday December 6, 2008. Scheduled featured performers are multiple Grammy award-winning American songwriting legend Jimmy Webb (“By The Time I Get To Phoenix," “Wichita Lineman," “Up Up And Away," "Macarthur Park," etc.); New Orleans’ own Allen Toussaint; Records recording artist Cassandra Wilson; and Acadian, Louisiana, French, and Canadian recording artist, author, and actor Zachary Richard.
Additional songwriter/artists include hit songwriter and ASCAP vice president Ralph Murphy, New Orleans resident and member of the famous Cowsill family, Susan Cowsill, and Warner Chappell staff writer Jim McCormick who hails from New Orleans but now calls Nashville home (where he has penned songs recorded by Tim McGraw, Tricia Yearwood, Randy Travis, and Ronnie Milsap among others).
Additionally, up and coming area songwriters will get a chance to "show their stuff" in front of an audience at the first ever NEW ORLEANS SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL/BLUEBIRD CAFE OPEN MIC. The event will be conducted and hosted by Nashville's famous Barbara Cloyd, who has run the Open Mic at the Bluebird Café in Nashville since its inception more than 20 years ago.
The purpose of the New Orleans Songwriters Festival is to promote the composition of original music in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region and advance the careers of the area's writers and musicians by providing performance opportunities in front of the publishing and music industry center (i.e., Nashville, LA, NY) professionals that will be invited to the event. Proceeds from the event will be donated to area music- and musician-related charities (such as The New Orleans Musicians Clinic).
“Songfest” is actively seeking additional sponsors. Sponsorships donations are expected to be tax deductible 501(c)(3) contributions. Contact William ("Buck") Provosty at 504-400-1132 or buck@nosongfest.com for further information.
We expect to add a limited number of additional songwriter/artists to the 2008 festival and are also compiling names for future years' Songfests, so if you are interested in performing, please email Bud Tower at bud@nosongfest.com.
